Heart health and You

Your Heart Doesn't Know It's a Workday.

Your Heart Doesn't Know It's a Workday.

Most of us know we should look after our heart. We know we should move more, eat better, sleep properly and probably stress a little less. Knowing it and actually doing it are two very different things.

For many people, the working day makes those healthy choices harder. Hours at a desk, meals eaten between meetings, too much time on a screen and not enough time moving. Add the pressure of deadlines, work that follows you home and the general feeling that there is always something else to get done.

None of this means someone is automatically unhealthy. But over time, these habits can add up. That’s why World Heart Day is a useful reminder to look at heart health before there is a reason to worry about it.

Heart health starts before the warning signs

Cardiovascular health isn't just about what happens when someone has a heart problem. It’s also about understanding the risks that can build quietly over time.

Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, weight, physical activity, diet, sleep and stress all have a role to play. Some of these can be changed through everyday habits. Others can be identified through regular health checks and managed with the right support.

The earlier people understand their own risk, the more opportunity they have to do something about it. And this is where employers and their health partners have an important role to play. A workplace can make healthy choices easier. It can give people access to health screenings, practical education and support that fits into real life. It can also create a culture where taking care of your health isn't seen as something you do only when you're already unwell.

It’s not just about getting people to exercise

Heart health is often reduced to one simple message: move more. Movement matters, of course. But a genuinely useful heart health programme has to look at the bigger picture. What are people eating? Are they getting enough sleep? How are they managing stress? Do they know their blood pressure or cholesterol levels? Are they spending most of the day sitting? And perhaps most importantly, do they understand which changes would actually make a difference to their health?

8 Mile’s Heart Health programme takes this broader approach through four simple pillars: MOVE. EAT. SLEEP. CALM. The idea isn't to ask people to overhaul their lives overnight. It’s about helping them understand the connection between everyday choices and long-term heart health, then giving them practical ways to make those choices more sustainable..

A healthier workforce starts with prevention

For brokers, this creates an opportunity to have a different conversation with clients. Instead of waiting for claims data to tell the story, prevention can start earlier. Health screenings and risk assessments can help identify where support is needed. From there, targeted interventions can give employees a clearer understanding of their health and the steps they can take to improve it.

That could mean helping someone become more active, making better food choices, improving their sleep or learning how to manage stress more effectively. Small changes can matter when they become part of everyday life.

This World Heart Day, the message is simple: don't wait for a warning sign before starting the conversation. Know the risks. Start earlier. Make prevention part of the plan. Because heart health isn't something that should only matter when there's a problem. It's something worth protecting every day.

SPEAKER/PANELISTS ENQUIRIES

What speaker topics do you accept?

All of our topics are connected with wellbeing in some way. They can range from physical, emotional, social, workplace, mental to financial wellbeing. You can be creative in how your topics fit under the wellbeing umbrella. We have image consultants, branding consultants, financial consultants and a range of facilitators of creative workshops. If you are unsure how your topics fit in, come talk to us. Additionally, how you design your session is up to you as long as it answers the brief. The IP remains yours.

How do I enrol as a speaker on your platform?

Contact us through the contact form on our contact page and we'll be in touch with you. We'll go over the topics you can do from our existing catalogue, including the languages you can deliver your topics in, and take the details we need to get you onboarded, including a brief profile and your profile picture. Once we've added you to the platform, you'll receive an email confirming your onboarding and the terms and conditions surrounding how you work under the 8 Mile brand.

Do I get paid for my speaking slots?

Yes, we do provide a stipend for you helping us to spread awareness on wellbeing. Doing talks for our vendors will also help you create awareness for your own business.

Is there a cost to being a panelist on your 8 Mile platform?

We levy a small annual administration fee for you to be listed on our platform to cover the time taken to set up your profile and liaise with the clients on your behalf.

What is the benefit of being on your platform?

You can look at the events we award to you as additional income you wouldn't have brought into your business otherwise, and that comes at zero marketing costs to you. We also find that popular speakers get requested over and over again, so that's a definite gain if you can wow with your delivery. We handle all the logistics for you and you just need to show up on the day.

Will I be able to charge the same amount I charge my direct customers?

We don't know what you charge your customers, but it is likely that you can charge more going direct. Going through us, we go through brokers, so to be transparent, there are markups at each stage there. The benefit is, the additional gigs we push your way require no marketing on your part, plus we also showcase our speakers on our social media channels, so we create awareness for you too, for free.

Can I promote my services and products at the end of my talks?

No, we do not allow this. We are engaged by the clients to provide educational experiences that bring value to their employees. This is not a space for you to promote or sell or make offers. You can introduce your company and leave attendees to connect with you if they choose.

Can I showcase the events I do through 8 Mile on my social media channels and elsewhere that's public?

Again, no you can't. Many of these events are internal for internal staff and we sign NDAs to protect employee privacy. You can ask the client directly if you can publicise and follow their clear directions if they allow. If they do allow, we request that you tag 8 Mile as the organiser in the post since the opportunity came from us. Always follow our terms and conditions, and ask if you have any doubts. Of course there are creative ways for you to communicate you did the events without revealing the customer or their staff. We also offer social media marketing support if you feel you need additional help with that.
