When We Talk About Health, We Need to Talk About the Whole Person
October gives us two important reasons to have conversations that are easy to put off.
It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder to pay attention to our physical health, know our risks and not ignore changes in our bodies. And on 10 October, World Mental Health Day gives us another reminder: our mental health deserves the same attention.
At first, they might seem like two very different conversations but they aren’t.
When someone is dealing with cancer, the impact doesn’t stop at the diagnosis or treatment. There can be fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, changes to daily life and the difficult process of finding a new normal. The same is true of many long-term health conditions. Physical health can affect how we feel mentally, and what we’re going through emotionally can affect how we cope with physical illness. That’s why looking at health in isolation doesn’t really work.
The part of health we don't always talk about
We’re generally quite good at talking about physical health when there’s something concrete to discuss. A screening, diagnosis, treatment plan or a test result. But mental health can be harder to spot.
Someone can be struggling and still turn up to work every day. They can continue answering emails, attending meetings and getting things done while quietly dealing with anxiety, exhaustion or fear. And sometimes, the people around them have no idea.
For someone going through cancer, mental wellbeing can become an especially important part of the journey. The uncertainty around diagnosis, treatment and recovery can be difficult to navigate. For colleagues, managers and employers, knowing how to support someone without making assumptions matters too.
It's important for workplace health to become more human.
Support shouldn't begin only when something goes wrong
A good workplace wellbeing strategy shouldn't be built around reacting to problems once they become impossible to ignore. It should make it easier for people to look after themselves before they reach that point.
That means creating access to appropriate health information and screening, encouraging people to pay attention to their health, and making mental health conversations less uncomfortable. It also means giving people access to the right support when they need it.
For employers and brokers, this is an important distinction. A wellbeing programme shouldn't simply add more activities to an already busy working day. It should respond to the health risks and needs of the workforce.
Our programmes bring together physical and mental health, prevention, lifestyle and clinical support rather than treating each as a separate conversation.
That could mean helping employees understand their cancer risks and the importance of early detection. It could mean creating space for conversations around stress and emotional wellbeing. It could also mean providing practical support for people managing an existing health challenge.
Because the person experiencing the health issue is still the same person who has to work, sleep, eat, manage relationships, make decisions and get through their day.
October is a good time to start the conversation
Breast Cancer Awareness Month and World Mental Health Day give us two opportunities to stop and think about health differently. Not as a list of conditions or as something we only discuss when there is a problem. But as something that affects the whole person.
For workplaces, that means making prevention easier, creating room for honest conversations and making support accessible when people need it.
Because good health isn't simply about avoiding illness. It's about giving people the knowledge, support and confidence to take care of themselves, physically and mentally.

We have a large panel of wellbeing experts that includes nutritionists, dieticians, physiotherapists, pilates instructors, psychologists and financial consultants for financial wellbeing as well as a range of painting and craft workshop facilitators designed to relieve stress.
For each patient you refer who takes up one of our programmes, you gain a referral fee for every dollar they spend with us. We are happy to discuss this with you.
Visit our contact page and complete the enquiry form, and one of our team will be in contact with you to arrange an online or face-to-face meeting.
All of our topics are connected with wellbeing in some way. They can range from physical, emotional, social, workplace, mental to financial wellbeing. You can be creative in how your topics fit under the wellbeing umbrella. We have image consultants, branding consultants, financial consultants and a range of facilitators of creative workshops. If you are unsure how your topics fit in, come talk to us. Additionally, how you design your session is up to you as long as it answers the brief. The IP remains yours.
Contact us through the contact form on our contact page and we'll be in touch with you. We'll go over the topics you can do from our existing catalogue, including the languages you can deliver your topics in, and take the details we need to get you onboarded, including a brief profile and your profile picture. Once we've added you to the platform, you'll receive an email confirming your onboarding and the terms and conditions surrounding how you work under the 8 Mile brand.
Yes, we do provide a stipend for you helping us to spread awareness on wellbeing. Doing talks for our vendors will also help you create awareness for your own business.
We levy a small annual administration fee for you to be listed on our platform to cover the time taken to set up your profile and liaise with the clients on your behalf.
You can look at the events we award to you as additional income you wouldn't have brought into your business otherwise, and that comes at zero marketing costs to you. We also find that popular speakers get requested over and over again, so that's a definite gain if you can wow with your delivery. We handle all the logistics for you and you just need to show up on the day.
We don't know what you charge your customers, but it is likely that you can charge more going direct. Going through us, we go through brokers, so to be transparent, there are markups at each stage there. The benefit is, the additional gigs we push your way require no marketing on your part, plus we also showcase our speakers on our social media channels, so we create awareness for you too, for free.
No, we do not allow this. We are engaged by the clients to provide educational experiences that bring value to their employees. This is not a space for you to promote or sell or make offers. You can introduce your company and leave attendees to connect with you if they choose.
Again, no you can't. Many of these events are internal for internal staff and we sign NDAs to protect employee privacy. You can ask the client directly if you can publicise and follow their clear directions if they allow. If they do allow, we request that you tag 8 Mile as the organiser in the post since the opportunity came from us. Always follow our terms and conditions, and ask if you have any doubts. Of course there are creative ways for you to communicate you did the events without revealing the customer or their staff. We also offer social media marketing support if you feel you need additional help with that.
